Brooklyn Pocket Watch Case mark question

    Hey all,
I picked this up, it has an Elgin Model 10 movement, but have never seen this lion mark on any of the Brooklyn Watch cases. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance for any info.....

Without seeing the watch: 14 Karat solid gold if it (/the case) has been made before 1906 (prior to the National Gold and Silver Stamping Act). Thereafter, something different. Check the serial number on the movement in the pocketwatch database for age.

To be more precise, one has to see other pictures (watch/total case). You concentrated just on the hallmark which is usually enough.

Here is a 14K Waltham with that case and the relevant description, basically repeating what I have said above:

Datreedude...I do not see this Mark in my listings for either Solid Gold, or Gold Filled. I'm pretty sure someone will know...as you may have heard, though, if one is not certain as to identification, it's considered best / smart (!), to assume that it's Gold Filled.

I suggest to Post this over on the NAWCC Site...someone there WILL know!

And: if you're ever in a position to need to 'know' ( always a rather dangerous word to use, yes? ) what a case's made from--for, example at a distant shop--always carry a good, strong loupe, and peer into an edge on the case--say, down by the area of a hinge--it's almost always possible to tell a filled case by detecting a shiny, thin layer of gold, that's on top of a duller, brass, base...I've run into MANY a case that was priced / indicated on a tag, to be Solid Gold...nope: it was Filled!

    Then again: sometimes it's priced @ Filled...nope: it's Solid!

    Good Hunting! Michael

ps: check back when you discover what it is.

Here is an old BWC ad that could help with this mystery.

Looks like an early gold-filled case. If memory serves, BWC cases that are solid gold have large hallmarks with the word "Warranted".

    Hope this helps,

Re: Brooklyn Pocket Watch Case mark question

I think my prior post needs to be amended.

I did some more research this morning and came across the following:

    B.W.C.Co. Hallmarks

    http://vi.raptor.ebaydesc.com/ws/eBa...50&cspheader=1

It seems that there is some evidence that these cases are 14K solid gold. But neither of the above link show anything definitive.

I would suggest that the case be tested by a jeweler for gold content.
