    Bulova estate sale buy

Here is my latest estate sale find. It runs, but plan to have it serviced and cleaned. A little oxidation on the hands and crystal scratches but it should clean up nicely. I couldn't figure out how to get the back open, so no movement photo. Interesting there is no year code on caseback. I plan to give it to my Dad as a gift. Already bought a strap as you can see.

Anyone care to speculate on the year it was made?

Looks from here like it might be a top loader. There seem to be no notches to get a case back tool in to unscrew it and the case back looks too small to be a snap down back.

Agreed, this is a top loader with a split stem. Probably 50's or early 60's. Probably get more accurate if you can get to the movement.

If a top loader, you might want a watchmaker to open it. First of all, I would suggest having it serviced and polishing out or replacing the crystal. Second, the lume might be radium (if from the 1950s, it most likely is just that), and you really wouldn't want to handle the watch incorrectly, as a) the case is most likely full of some pretty nasty, carcinogenic gas that you really wouldn't want to accidentally inhale, and b) a top loader will require taking out the movement and the dial, which means potential contact with the lume.

Very nice, it is in fact a top loader and should be from the mid 60s. I have the same model.

Great input everyone. I have sent the watch to a watch guru for servicing and cleaning (a fellow WUS member who has been a big help).

One question is whether to re-lume or not to re-lume? We'll see how well the hands and dial clean up, but give me your opinion on whether re-luming here is needed or desirable, or not.

Don't relume it. The dial doesn't look like it needs a cleaning either.

Great looking Bulova! I like the strap on it too!

Quick update. Got the watch back from servicing. Kudos again go to fellow WUS member YuriyV for the excellent restoration work. Note that we did NOT re-lume. The purist and pragmatist in me battled over re-luming, and the purist won! Plan to give this to my old man as a gift when I see him in 2 weeks.
