Can anyone help tell me what this watch is?

My dad said this watch was on his folks mantle in a glass case, as he grew up.
But he's an old Chicagoland Dutchman, and in the '70s, maybe this deserved to be in a glass case.

Old Elgin? South Bend? Has anyone have any idea? He gave it to me - "you'd appreciate it the most".

A gift like this means more to me than my wife's gift of an Explorer II. Very heartfelt gift, and I am just trying to find out as much as I can before I pop the caseback off.

Seems like a hunter watch that was put into an open-face case. What makes you think it's an American watch? I would have been inclined to guess that it's from Europe based on the dial.

But honestly, it's all total speculation until you open it up.

Though you should never ever say that to your wife...

rusty-dutch...Hello. Please: "...pop the caseback off."

And: a Question...why would you give us all kinds of nice pix of everything BUT that which we need to positively ID your watch?...you've lost me here... Michael.

HAHAH, oh Michael - I was trying to figure it out before popping off the caseback. If I did pop the caseback off, as mentioned above, I would know. I was just trying to avoid that.

Try reading the entire OP post before you post. Thanks!

Michael is not new to this forum, and I suspect he read your entire post and viewed all the photos. He is simply trying to reinforce the same point made by several others. I suspect that many of us are harboring similar suspicions about this watch, but since it is an heirloom piece and emotionally meaningful to you, we don't want to jump to conclusions without more comprehensive information.

The ball is in your court; we will be happy to help when there is some useful information for us to go on.

I suspect it is one of those swiss movements with a thousand bridges.
