    Can this dial be cleaned?

I am looking at something that looks like cracked top layer of paint but I am not sure. Is this some kind of white moss? Can it be cleaned off the dial without damage or should I not bother?

I tried water and then baby oil but it still wont clean up. Any suggestions?

Once I decide whether to clean or not I can try putting back the lume dots.

Its probably laquer cracking. I wouldn't take the chance of messing it up. All the rest looks nice. The cracks just add character.

Any treatment will make it worse. Just update lume dots, that will be enough.

Ok, looks like not cleaning is better. I'll apply the lume dots then. Thanks!

For what it's worth, I think those old Russian military-style watches look great with some crazing and cracking on the dial.
There is something more to the art of watchmaking and repairing than that of merely assembling a watch and making it 'tick.'

i wouldn't update the lume dots or clean the dial.

Just leave it as is, there is a big chance you will only make it worse.

Think of the stuff you are talking about as the recorded history of the watch. That's what makes it different and interesting. What events did this well worn watch witness? You get to ponder that question. Erase the history and it's just an old watch.
