Can someone tell me more about this watch?

I recently acquired a vintage Hamilton watch and I know nothing about it. I'd like to get it cleaned and checked out, but before I take it to my local chronologist, I'd like to learn more about it. Thanks for any help.

A thumbnail will get the back opened. That will expose the movement and will tell us more.

One hand is obviously not original.

I'd date it in the 40's but some Hammy expert could probably even tell you what they called this model.
"Forever is composed of nows." - Emily Dickinson

"The watch has to be surrounded by a history.
You need more than just a great design. You need to create an atmosphere around the product.
Who is the company behind it? Why are they using this material?
People need to be able to identify the watch with themselves. It's based on emotion." - Ralph Furter

...that's just my opinion and I've been wrong before and will be again and might be now!

Inside the back it should say the name of the watch. I agree 40s. Probably a 980 or 982 movement, but we need to see it.

Alternatively, look here or here for info and old catalogues - you can probably find it in identified in an add. If you open the back, you can get the movement/serial number, and look it up here, which will narrow down the number of catalogs you need to look at.

I was able to pop the case open with no problems. And happily, it was ticking away inside. I've added new photos to the set. Thanks again for the responses.

Oh ok, a bit earlier, 1935-36. You have the 980 17J movement.

Have a look in the adds for around this time. There is no model name inside your back - so you have to do it the hard way.

Thanks for the help. After looking through the 1935 and 1936 catalogs, I've determined that my watch looks most like the Calvin. :)

    What do you think?

Dial is a common one. The case looks more like a Boone to me, but with a different dial as in the Calvin amongst others. You don't have a front on photo - so it isn't that clear to me.

I've attached a photo of the front. You can also see another one in the flickr set.

Still looks like a Boone to me. In the 1937 catalog, it says the Boone has 2 dial options, applied markers or applied gold numerals. Yours is the more expensive applied gold numerals dial.

I think that solves the problem of identification.

Can't add to the identification and information...but would like to say what a nice watch you have there.
