Carrying a vintage pocket watch in the summer heat

I've been carrying a 1923 Illinois Bunn Special daily since I got it about two months ago. It has a Rose Gold filled case with some moderate brassing around the edges.

I'm a little concerned about how the summer heat might affect the watch. I don't carry carbon steel bladed pocket knives in the summer because my perspiration soaking through my jeans causes them to corrode rather quickly. Stainless steel blades hold up just fine on those sweaty days.

How would my watch hold up under these conditions? Should I refrain from carrying it on hot days to avoid damage?

    Thanks.

Have a look at wristwatch cases from tropical areas; human sweat is incredibly corrosive, especially for plated/base metal filled cases.

Thank you. That's what I was afraid of. In the drawer she goes until fall.

I wonder what the railroad workers did in those days.

That might work but would that be enough protection? The pouch itself would surely get saturated.

Re: Carrying a vintage pocket watch in the summer heat

Remember that the guy shoveling coal into a several hundred degree fire in the middle of winter or the dead of summer wore one of these. I've worn many pocket watches in the summer, and haven't ever worried to much about them. The only caveat is that I only carry them in a dedicated watch pocket(such as on a pair of blue jeans), which is a bit more "protective" than a just a plain pocket.

I have two very similar Case medium stockman pattern knives, one in carbon steel(or I guess more correctly CV) and one in stainless. Even though I prefer the carbon steel one, I do tend to carry the stainless one more in the summer for the reason you mentioned(and when I do carry the carbon steel one I oil it almost daily). I carry my knife loose in my left pocket, though, where it's a lot more vulnerable to sweat than a pocket watch.

Re: Carrying a vintage pocket watch in the summer heat

Thanks for all the feedback, guys. I would prefer to carry the watch without a pouch like I do now but a pouch will certainly be an option for me. I do carry my Bunn Special in my pocket watch. A pouch would require two hands to check the time instead of just one but it would certainly be better than allowing corrosion to set in.

I think I'll try carrying one of my carbon steel knives in my watch pocket on some hot days and see how it affects the knife. I usually carry my pocket knives in my right, front pocket below the pocket watch so maybe that would make a difference like Ben mentioned. If the knife still corrodes in my pocket watch then I'll get myself a pouch and just learn to live with the two handed concept. Who knows, I might even end up liking it.

    Thanks again folks!

A leather pouch with transparent plastic side view would be an option for a single handed time read :) If such things exist at all :D

Excellent suggestion! I think I've seen those before but I don't know if they were designed for watches. Doesn't really matter, I guess. As long as a watch would fit.
