    Case Material Question

In a watch (men's or women's) with a solid gold case, is it the norm or expected that the crown is also of solid gold? Of course assuming that the crown is original.

You can buy gold crowns but watches I have seen have plated crowns and I think on manual wind watches gold would wear down with the stem being steel.

    Re: Case Material Question

As it was told to me by my jeweller, who does repairs for me: if something is hallmarked solid gold, then every part of the piece in direct contact must also be gold for the hallmark to be valid. So he says that the bezel - being in direct contact - ought to be solid gold. But I'm not sure if that would apply to the crown, as it's an 'extension' to the piece, fitted as it is to a steel part. Hope that adds some more confusion to things. But a solid gold case fitted with a metal bracelet should have a sold gold metal bracelet, too (if indeed it has a metal bracelet, as opposed to a leather strap), according to his gospel.

    Re: Case Material Question

I think that we discussed this on the Zenith forum when we had some of the early (1970s) gold El Primeros and on at least some (probably all) with gold cases, the crown was only plated. So, it can happen - on gold watches, the crown may be gold (hard to believe that a gold Patek would have a plated crown) but it may be plated.
