Certina Automatic Bristol 235. Please help me find more details!

Greetings everyone! New to this board, so hope I'm posting in the right area! :)

I recently inherited a watch from my grandfather. A Certina Automatic - Bristol 235. Now I'm just curious to know more about it. How old is it? The precise model? Etc.

I don't really have any knowledge regarding watches, other than being able to see what time it is :)

On the backside of the watch it says:

    "49/8 - 6/22B" (I think - it seems to be scratched there?)

    And under that, it says:

    5806 230-5
    8591227

Hope anyone can help me, would love to know more about my grandfathers watch.

Best regards, and thanks in advance,

    Søren, Denmark.

58 tells us that it has the finest automatic Certina meda in the 60's and 70's, the 25-651.

06 means that the case has a 20 micron layer of gold so it was a bit more exlusive and wears better.

230-5 is the case design and I believe this is where they got the Bristol 230, 235 numbers from.

8591227 is the number of watches Certina had made up to this date (not counting special watches like gold.). And it's from around 1971-72 so it's actually little newer then one would first think.

There is no clear information about the Bristol models and I haven't found out why they chose the name Bristol but my suspicions is that Certina tried to make in rows into the English market as they also released the Jubile model just before the Bristol. The Bristol 190 came out in 1963/64 and I believe the 230/235 model came out in 1967/68 and oddly the Bristol 228 came out in the mid 70's.

Shum, do you have knowledge of Waterkings, when they were last produced? The most I have seen do have 25-36, which was early 60's caliber. I have thought that Waterking as a brand was already registered at British market, so Certina started to use Bristol (Names of towns, countries and geographical places can not be registered as anybody's own property. So Bristol was a safe bet). Maybe Certina lost a court case, and stopped making Waterkings altogether. Waterking was a great brand name. Bristol models were marketed to Northern Europe aswell, so it was not just to British market..
It is a shame that Vintage Certinas site does not have proper information about these "lesser sub brands" like Bristol or Waterking.

The oldest Waterking I haves seen is from ca 1962 and the newest is from ca 1974 so it was around at the same time as the Bristol.

Waterking 215 (same as 210 but no 210's here in Sweden) seams to have been short lived ca 1969-1970 but there could be newer or older watches lurking that I have not picked up on yet and the same with Waterking 275 that I have seen from ca 1971-1972. I have a Waterking with a 210-5 case from 1971 so they could have just stopped using the 210-215 names.

There was also the Argonaut models that were sold from ca 1967 to ca 1975. The ones to look for are the 285 models that start with 854 as they have the very rare 854-1 movement and is in my mind the most beautiful movement ever made.

The only real difference between different Certina models are the case designs and the Brisol's use more dress watch looking cases and Waterking's used more sporty UFO shapes.

Observe that all the years are from serial numbers collected and can/will change when more are collected. Also when one looks at ads take in mind that watches made for a model year starts to be made the year before. So for example a 1973 model can have been made in 1972.

So (and I certainly don't hope I sound like a greedy brat now) how much is this watch worth? Never going to sell it, since the watch reminds me of my long gone granddad - just curious.

    Best regards, Søren.
