Christmas present for 23 year old son

    Hi Everyone
I have just joined this site to ask a specific question - and in my admittedly limited research, everyone here seems to really know what they are talking about. I would like to buy a vintage watch for my 23 year old son. I have a budget of around £200 and I obviously want to get the best deal for my money..... what would anyone recommend as being the best brand/watch to look for? I have been reading previous posts, and it seems as though Tissot might be the answer, but would really appreciate any advice!

My son works in the City (London financial district) and likes classic things.......

    Any advice?

    Thank you!
    Annabel

Christmas present for 23 year old son

Are you thinking sporty or dressy?

This thread might be helpful. Some nice suggestions in here...

I like tissot, but if it was going to be a nice dress watch and serviced to last awhile, vintage longines or Hamiltons always catch my eye.

I agree with Tissot, and I would add Doxa, Eterna, Certina, Cyma, and Movado. I think you can find high quality stainless steel dress watches from these brands in decent condition within your budget.

This seller on Reddit is really really great. He often has simple, classic affordable that are close to your price range (a little bit above). You may want to ask him if he has any stock that meets your parameters

Tissot is, by all means, an excellent choice. I agree with Dan's suggestions - although Doxa, since most of them have chrome plated cases, and since unfortunately the quality of chrome plating was something that Doxa never got quite right, might not be the most durable of choices. Tons of battered and re-plated Doxas on the market. Besides, many sellers and dealers try to sell Doxas as featuring in-house movements, although Doxa never actually designed a movement for gents' wristwatches.

I do agree, that Eterna, Movado, Cyma and Certina make an excellent choice. Of the four, I'm especially fond of Eterna, and I wholeheartedly recommend it - if you manage to find a good specimen in a stainless steel case with a screw-in back, it'll make a great everyday watch. I certainly consider mine a great everyday watch.

Guess you could also look for a nice Bulova, for example a 1950s "23" with the cal. 10BPAC. Guess the budget leaves a lot of room for finding a really well-preserved specimen, and there will still be a lot of spare change for a decent strap.

Another suggestion of mine would be an Atlantic, maybe an early 1950s Worldmaster (for the Swedish market signed "Varldsmastarur") with a two-tone dial - sporty and dressy in one. These usually came with really well-finished generic movements by ETA and A.Schild, with a minimum of two adjustments. Only I'd suggest limiting that to specimens in stainless steel cases - most Atlantics were sold behind the Iron Curtain, and these markets got the more "budget" versions in chrome-plated cases.

Anyway, whatever you find, I suggest you consult the forum to verify authenticity first (before you buy!) - it'd be quite a pity for a Christmas gift to turn out to be a "lemon", and I believe I can also speak for the others when I say that we'll be happy to help you with the authentication.

For any inquiries regarding vintage Doxa watches, please read the highlighted text in my vintage Doxa thread. Sorry, but I will not respond to PMs on the matter.

Interestingly, I never realized this until just now when I was doing a search to see if I could find something for Annabel. Every Doxa I found was chrome-plated.
