    Date a vintage alpha?

I've never really gotten a lot of info on this watch- the first vintage one, picked up a year ago and got me interested in the history. I picked it out of a bin for $5 and wound it up and it ran for a bit. Needs work, but I'd like to see if I can get any more information on it. I know Alpha is a sort of generic Swiss company, but I don't know much more than that. This looks earlier than 70's. The corrosion on the hands and numbers is pretty severe... radium? Thanks.

The classic Felsa Bidynator and anyone that's into vintage watches should have one. It's from the late 1940's, early 1950's going by the styling of the case, dial and hands. Sad to say the case looks to be made with chrome plate so it's a bit cheap and I don't think it's a Radium watch as only the hands are in real bad shape.

A funny thing with your watch is that they have added UN- to ADJUSTED on the rotor and with a quick look at the balance cock you can find the reason why as it was exported to the US.

The movement was made by Felsa for Framont then exported to the US and put in a watch branded Alpha so who made it I don't know.

I think it says DYR on the balance cock and Ranfft has it listed for the following importers: Den-Ro, Bernard Vuille, Tramelan.

I think those are Radium lumed hands and dial dots...

There are no burns round the dots but then it could be a weak Radium mixture but the hands sure could be and one should always treat a watch with lume from this period with care just to be safe.

Thanks folks. That helps... I know I had the oldest it could be as 1947 doing a quick lookup on the movement. This will be my first repair project. I have not done anything other than remove the back, but I intend to remove the movement and clean the face and dial... very carefully, since there's at least a chance the lume is radium. Hopefully a clean and lube and it will work well again without needing re-balancing. I'd wear it with a bit of polishing even though the base metal is starting to show through.
