Did Gruen ever use silver as a base metal during WWII?

I'm looking at a gold filled Curvex that allegedly has a base of silver due to metal rationing during the war.

Anyone ever hear of this practice?

    Hi -

In a word, yes. There were A-11s made with silver cases. Rare, especially nowadays, but did exist (the peace-time alternative, brass, was used extensively in military equipment, especially cartridges cases...).
