Re: Difference between Croton and Nivada

Another topic on these two brands that we can discuss, is their founding date. All of the Croton information that I have seen, states that they were founded in 1878. You see it on their boxes, on their dials, etc. If you read the Nivada Wikipedia page, it says the company was founded in 1879, with a footnote paragraph reading: "Nivada was founded as early as 1879, in 1887, or as late as 1926 in Grenchen, Switzerland. "
That has me confused now as to the actual founding date of each brand.

Here's a 1960 Sea Blade I got in a "junk" E-Bay lot. I did some cosmetic work, put a loose hand back on, and cleaned and oiled the stem. Seems to run great. I've put it to the side for the moment until I can give it a real service.

Such a fine watch to get for under 20 dollars the brand is undervalue in my opinion!

Many watch factories started out as parts manuracturer for other factories or made just movements. Later they expanded out making their own watches, so different date starting of the company and to birth of the brand. What is the correct date for birthday of the brand. It's up how you look at it.

Re: Difference between Croton and Nivada

Croton & Nivada were two different companies, Nivada & Grenchen were swiss and parts makers while Croton was New York based (Croton-on-Hudson or somewhere close to there) & an assembler of parts from the two earlier mentioned manufactories. Eventualy the 3 were combined into 1 conglomeration going by the name of Croton Nivada Grenchen. I have hundreds of parts from them including dials movements cases and bracelets etc. due to my late grandfather having been a Croton master watchmaker there in NY in the post WW2 era. The dials I have sport various combinations of the 3 names. I have sold off some of the dials on eBay over time but am now preoccupied with other watch paraphernalia at this time so i no longer list them.

    Yidi,
In your collection of dials, do you have one that might fit this Nivada chronograph?

I bought it new in 1959, but it didn't fare well in tropical climes.

Sorry for the late reply, but I doubt I have any chronograph dials from them.
