    EARLY KW HOWARD

Serial 3821 is from 1862 with 1859 patent MERSHON regulator, Marked N for 44.6 mm dial side near 18 size diameter. Since a key winder it can be used in hunter or open face case. Has good dial. Have a couple same age silver cases used for early kw Walthams may be adaptable? artbissell

Have learned that these hard to case old HOWARDS are most often cased in glass back exhibition cases which I will do for this one. It requires a slight widening of the diameter of an 18 size. artb

    Nice movement, Art.

Any chance I could see a side view of the balance and hairspring?

BEN; YES it has the small diameter vertical spiral hairspring of about 7 turns. On dial plate is lightly scratched M Cutchin L-70. artb

Thanks Art-I thought it looked like it had a helical hairspring.

    Very nice!

    Re: EARLY KW HOWARD

NAWCC FORUM activity about this old HOWARD discloses it as a perhaps one of very few with helical hairspring and with MERSHON'S patent regulator. The difficult to see adjuster signature on it is for ALBERT McINTOSH, 4-70. Thus finished 1863 movement in 1870. So a rare special interest movement best seen without case and even dial. Deserves better photos of details I will attempt. artb

    Beautiful movement...

Was it common for an adjuster to sign a movement?

I would say it was the exception rather than the rule.
