Ebay Elgin - need info please...

Bought this watch on Ebay last week. It's in good condition, except for a chip in the center of the dial, running strong and keeping good time. The following info is from the online Elgin database:

Ford Motor Company was started in 1903, this watch dates to 1904. Can anyone tell me anything about the possible ties to the early Ford Motor Co.? Anyway, not bad for $100, eh?

The Ford script lettering was there from 1903 in company correspondence, but I think the first oval shaped Ford logo came in 1907, used by their agents in UK, and then the combination of script and oval in 1911, still in UK. The first vehicle to wear the blue oval badge was the A model of 1927.

It's not in the original case, as it's a "sidewinder" (a hunter case movement in an open face case.) I have never seen a blue Ford logo like that on an Elgin porcelain dial before. The Elgin lettering on the dial is very characteristic of 1904 though. It looks like the tip of the subsecond hand was painted blue to match the logo, so that may have been done later on.

    Ray,

The blue tip on the subsecond hand is a reflection of light off the blue steel. It has not been painted.

I bought it for three reasons:
    1. It was cheap, I thought
    2. It was a decent running old Elgin
    3. The Ford connection
I know we don't do valuations here, but did I do OK on price?

I'm not knowledgeable enough (YET - thanks to you guys, I'm leaning!) to be able to spot that the case wasn't original. Should I seek out an old hunter case?

Thanks to you and Erik_H for the info.

Condition is the most important thing in any watch purchase and really should determine the price you pay. I wouldn't say you got a bargain here as it's quite a pedestrian quality Elgin, in the wrong case, and the dial is not in that great a condition. I really don't know about the Ford logo, sorry, but here's an interesting article:

Nice article, thanks for the link! As my dear departed grandmother used to say, "The best lessons are those you pay for."
