    eBay Eterna-matic

It's funny for me to post this on the same evening as another member posted his grail Patek Phillipe, but I think it's nice to show some new collectors that there are excellent watches to be had for modest prices, even on eBay. It isn't the style of watch I'd usually buy, but this Eterna-matic was just sitting there looking so lovely, and the the seller had it listed for a fair price but still had a Make an Offer listing. So I made an offer and got it for under $200. Very clean dial and hands, 35mm stainless case. Case appears to be unpolished with modest wear-and-tear.

The only possible issue is that the crown is unsigned, but it will be very difficult to determine if this is correct or not given that many Eterna models from this period had unsigned crowns. It's a perfect fit and I've found similar examples with unsigned crowns. Anyway, I don't like to fool myself, so I'm willing to accept it could be a replacement.

Serial numbers on movement and case are from the same year, 1960.

I can't read the numbers under the balance, but I believe it's something in the cal 1411 family. Very clean, but needs a service. You can see some green corrosion under the crown, but hopefully it is not too serious.

It came with a really nice vintage mesh bracelet (decent fit, but not perfect) and an old box. This really exceeded my expectations and will be well worth the price of a service to preserve this excellent watch.

Eterna-matics are among the best quality and value found in today's vintage market. The only thing that I don't like about your example is the recessed crown, as winding can be a bit of a pain. But a very nice watch for sure, and especially at that price. Congratulations!

Not sure it is meant for winding being "-matic" :)
I think unsigned crown is correct for hidden crowns, that's the idea for crown to not get in one's way

Awesome piece. I like the aged Tritium dots and besides all I just love the box.. I have this special affinity for watch boxes ☺️

Thanks for your comments. You are both right-on about the recessed crown. It is virtually impossible to wind by hand. I suppose the idea is that it will have sufficient power reserve just from auto-winding? I really don't know, it's the first recessed crown watch I have owned. It feels strange not to be able to give the watch a hand-winding jump start. Instead, I just waved it around in the air for 30 seconds or so.

I know that Eterna was very proud of their ball-bearing winding system, and I wonder if this wasn't a bit of a marketing gimmick for them to show that since it was so efficient, you didn't even need to wind it by hand. After it's serviced, I will do a bit of a test by just wearing it for 12 hours and then seeing how long it runs afterwards.

Lovely watch. I've got a couple of recessed-crown Eterna-matics, including this one that looks like the date sibling of yours but much younger--serial #5050118. Neither crown is signed but I don't really care. This one can actually be wound a bit, but with the other one it's even difficult to set the time--my watchmaker says the only alternative would be a longer stem that would leave the crown sticking out. I like the recessed-crown look enough to put up with the annoyance and it starts on a dime, anyway.

Absolutely, assuming it's 35mm (or actually more like 34.7mm), that's probably the same case, and the exact same style hands and dial, just with the date display. Do you know what movement is in yours? I'm becoming more of a believer that the unsigned crowns are correct.
