I'm doing some rearranging in my small watch collection, and will probably be getting rid of a modern Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical. I really appreciate the Hamilton brand, and like field watches, but there's I don't love this particular watch, so I'm going to pass it along to someone else.
I'm wondering if perhaps in the future I might be able to get my hands on a vintage Hamilton field watch. My thinking is that I could get a watch by a brand I value, get a field watch back into my collection, and also get something a little unique with a cool story.
But here's my problem: I don't know much about these watches, expect that they exist and there's a ton on eBay, with prices all over the map. My requirements for a watch I'd like to buy are pretty simple. As long as it looks decent and works well I'll be happy with it. Some non-original parts here or there (as long as they aren't glaring) wouldn't hinder my enjoyment of it.
I was hoping that someone here might be able to teach me some of the basics as I start to learn about them, or point me to a source.
What should I know?
What should I plan to spend?
Where should I look?
