    Elgin military pocketwatch

elgin seven jewel, size 18 from 1943

I'm assuming the tk on the back stands for tank but have no idea what the 9778 would be. Does anyone know what the marking mean?

Is the same number stamped into the side of the case as well? I have reservations about this one, to be honest.

Same here. The arrow looks like it is done from 3 individual pieces.
The number 8 is upside down.

There are so many black dialled watches that have been doctored to a " military watch" that I always assume first that they are fake.

Look on the engraving, with a loupe, see if the brass (?) has aged the same way as on the rest of the watch.

Only thing on the side of the watch is a star followed by the words base metal. (case is from star watch case company)

the engraving does have the same wear as the rest of the watch, so if they were faked it was done not long after the watch was made

A good sign. I am not an expert, but most military issued specialist watches had high grade movements. A pocket watch that was issued in WW2 was usually a specialist piece, build to exact specifications, and had totally different markings on the caseback.

As far as I know (and that's not a whole lot), all broad-arrow cases had the serial stamped on both the caseback and the edge of the case. At least, it's been true of all the ones I've seen. Are the hands lumed? They look solid, but I remember reading about versions where they would put lume on the underside of the hands (kinda backlighting).

Your watch movement is a size 16 grade 291, 7 jewel, 7th model made in 1942. Elgin did make watches such as yours for the British Army with the same style case, pendant, crown and dial. Also made in 17 jewels. Info in Whitney's "Military Watches" and the Yellow Elgin book.
