    Elgin model ID help

This is a watch that will be available for purchase at an upcoming estate sale. Anyone see this particular model before? It looks like it's in an all stainless steel case. All I have is this on photo. Sorry! Trying to determine whether to pursue.

    Thanks

Looks to be early-mid 1960s. Does it say 'Swiss' on the dial, at 6:00?

Willing to bet Swiss with a chrome case. But if you have read the back, I could be wrong. It all comes down to how low they are asking and if it works.

I don't know if it says "Swiss" at 6:00. I don't have a photo of the caseback, but have asked the person who has the watch to either send me a photo or tell me what's written on the back. As Thoth alludes to, it sure would be nice to know if it's chrome or all SS. My hunch is the watch is $15, maybe $20 tops.

    These were my thoughts exactly.

Running and keeping good time....sounds reasonable. If stainless quite reasonable. Non running and chrome, I would honestly avoid it. Factor in a minimum of $50 to $75 for a clean and oil of running slow. Not running at all, not even for 5 seconds in all positions....$100+ or winds but slips, around $100 to include a new mainspring above the cost of the clean and oil.

The cost of cleaning and repairs must always be factored in unless you just love the watch and have to have it no matter the cost....but the sounds of it this is a random pick up at a reasonable price situation.

Thanks Thoth. Very pragmatic advice. It's more of random pick up. If I have nothing better to do that morning, I will pick it up. Otherwise, I will skip. I've been very fortunate the past two weeks with two interesting pickups: an all SS automatic Gothomatic with a high grade ebauche movement AS1700/1 and a manual win Ernest Borel. Both are scheduled for service.

Agent got back to me. Caseback apparently reads "Metal bezel stainless steel." I interpret this as a chrome plated base metal bezel and a SS caseback. I plan to skip this one.
