    Elgin Shipmate?

So I got this vintage elgin watch at my local thrift store today.

The watch says Elgin Self-winding and Shockmaster on the dial. On the back it says Durapower among other things.

A look around the net shows a watch that looks like this and it is called the Elgin Shipmate. However it looks a bit different with the lugs, though I have only seen the Shipmate in Elgin sales ads where it was drawn so it might be the same watch as mine.

    Is this watch a shipmate?

The watch looks original except for the crown

    Thanks

    Re: Elgin Shipmate?

That's a 6805. In 1953, Elgin introduced a line of self-winding watches with Swiss movements. The 6805 was called the Shipmate. By 1954, the 6805 was called the Nautilus. I don't know why they changed the name. There are at least 3 different variants of dial that go with the Nautilus - this one, a luminous version, and a black version with only markers, not numerals. See the 1954 catalog on VWF. Yours is probably the 6805C.

It's a nice little watch, the Nautilus.

    Re: Elgin Shipmate?

    Thanks for the reply.

One of the pictures that I did not post(since it came out all crappy) was the movement pic. It is a nice looking Elgin 643 17 jewel movement.

The watch runs well and the inner case back is littered with jewelers writing. This watch was well serviced over the years. it looks good and other then wear and a small crack on the crystal (the crack seems to be an inside crystal crack as I cannot feel it), the watch looks and runs great. In face in 24 hours it is spot on time to the minute.

So is this watch a Shipmate or a Nautilus?

    Thanks again

    Yes. It's a Shipmate or a Nautilus.

Not to be glib, but the thing is, Elgin really only cataloged their watches by the 4-digit model number. If Elgin changed the name at some point, and we don't know A) when that happened and B) when your watch was made, there's no way to distinguish between them.

There is one thing that suggests it wasn't in the first year of production. Your dial says 'Self-Winding', whereas when first introduced they were labeled 'Automatic'. This pic is of three of the early Elgin Swiss Automatics. Note that the outer two have 'Automatic', whereas the middle one has 'Self-Winding'.
