    Elgin star dial

    Can anybody tell me the production years for the star dials (white and black)
    What I want to know is when it began and when it ended.

    Hi Jose,

    the oldest ones are date stamped on the back.

    but roughly (from the top of my head),

    white (metal) 1917 - early 1918.
    Black enamel - narrow digits, May-Jul 1918
    Black enamel - fat digits, Jul 1918 on

    So production was only 3 years.
    There most have been a lot of them made.

    I guess a lot were made of the fat digit version. The others are much less common. That said, the ones that are desirable dial and case combos are the models shown in the US army bulletin, and in the named post armistice advert versions. It seems a lot were put together after this date though from left over stock. The later put togethers have later jobber cases and usually the incorrect grade movements and incorrect hands.

    The right hands, case and grade of movement to get everything right is not trivial. Especially the hands.

    I've seen a lot with movement dates in the later 1920s.

    Anyway Stan is putting out an authoritative book on these soon.
