Eterna Matic 1000 - Can anyone help?

Hello, I've just been given an Eterna Matic 1000 (it belonged to my wife's late grandfather) and I was wondering if anyone could help me identify the model and what sort of age it might be. I've got some photos of the front, back and side but I'm not 100% sure how the back comes off (and don't want to try anything daft as it's lovely and I don't want to damage it) so I've not been able to take a photo of the movement. If anyone could advise on that then that would be really helpful.

I don't know if they all have this, but it has a nice feature to advance the date by pulling the crown out.

To my untrained and inexperienced eye it looks genuine as it has an original box and the 5 ball bearing mark on the crown, plus the original owner was not know to buy rubbish, but all opinions welcome.

Hi Tim and welcome to the forum.

    All looks good to me.

You could contact eterna with the case serial number on the case back for an idea of the production date... they are normally very good at providing info. They should also be able to tell you what the movement is.

    Contact & Media | Eterna

I would guess the watch dates from the mid 60s to 70s... if not a little earlier. Im unsure what date the 1000 series came out!

I would also guess the watch movement is a 14xx series... something like this one:

    Private Collection - Eterna Watches
Very nice watch and I dont see anything that makes me think its anything but original... nice to have the box to!

Please let us know if you decide to contact Eterna and what they say....

The watch looks good to me too. To remove the back, you would need a proper case wrench - but you are right, they are easily scratched.

You could ask a (proper) watchmaker to open it for you and give his opinion as to whether it needs to be serviced or not - and also ask if you could take a picture while it was open.

Please don't PM me to ask for a valuation - I won't attempt one.

Thank you both! Glad to know that I shouldn't attempt to fiddle without the right tools!

I've emailed Eterna and I'll let you what they say.

I think I may have accidentally started a watch collection as I already have my late maternal Grandfather's JW Benson gold half hunter pocket watch. Something tells me this could be a very expensive hobby but watches are just amazing works of art!

    Thanks again!

A small collection can quite quickly turn into an addiction..... escape while you still can!!

As Marrick says... some are expensive... some are cheaper..... Eterna for example is a quality swiss maker with lots of history.... but an still be picked up relatively cheaply.... not that I want more competition for the Eterna bargains out there....

Im sure some of the Pocket watch enthusiasts would would love to see the Half hunter... but you may want to start a new thread for that!

    Hi Tim,

it was made in the mid 60s and has one of these movements (depending on diameter):
bidfun-db Archive: Watch Movements: Eterna 1488K
bidfun-db Archive: Watch Movements: Eterna 1489K
Eterna may tell it more precisely if you submit them the case number (shallow engraved on the back).

Thanks Roland, that's very interesting! Nice to see inside what may be watch without attempting to open it. I've sent Eterna the case number and weill post up what they say.

I think I'll do lots of reading before getting to much further on building my collection as I suspect that the unwary and ill educated can easily be taken for an expensive ride! Might be tempted to take a punt on 1p watches tho.! :)

I will post up some photos of the half hunter at the weekend.

    Thanks again everyone!

    Tim
