Eterna Matic 2002 - Worth Servicing?

    Hello all.

I've just went through some of my father's leftovers and found this piece.
I looked around online for a couple days now and couldn't find any match with that specific model.

Now, obviously this watch has sentimental value to me and would be proud to wear it. It is not in good conditions but I really like the looks of it.

Do you guys think it's worth servicing? From what I've read so far, Eterna seems to be a very good watchmaker.

I am also writing to Eterna in order to see what they say about it.

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

    Deeclee.

ANY watch with sentimental value is worth servicing in my opinion. I have an average 18k gold Rotary watch with a date function that belonged to my late grandfather, which he was given for long service at Goodyear tyres back in the 1960's. The case back has been really badly damaged and needs to be repaired by a jeweller and the movement needs a new rotor. The repairs are going to cost probably 5 times what the watch is worth, but are they worth it so that I can get some use out of something that has sentimental significance? Absolutely!

    Thanks for the feedback.

The baseline is absolutely the significance of the timepiece and I also believe there's no way one could go wrong under these circumstances.

I was wandering about the cleaning part if it was going to end up shining nicely. I hope so.

Also, I do know very little about the watch so if anyone has any insight, please comment.

    Thanks again.

Here's the thing: it's a great looking watch, made all the better for having some sentimental value. It's absolutely worth getting serviced. You need a good independent watchmaker sensitive to vintage watches and their issues. Factory service is stinkingly expensive for what it is. If a problem, let us know where you are in the world and someone here might be able to suggest a good local repairman.

Eterna is a very good watchmaker, indeed. They have a long and important role in the development of mechanical watches. The 2002 series are sound, with high quality automatic winding movements. Your watch looks in superb condition. No doubt the mechanics need cleaning and adjusting, and the case would appear to want a gentle polish to restore it to its former glory. The dial itself is, in my experience, very unusual for Eterna, by the way. Really lovely - good luck with getting it serviced!

    Thanks Habitant.

    Very instructive information.
I am from Montreal but am working abroad. I am currently in Panama and will go to a local jeweler this week and ask for an estimate.
I have never serviced a watch in Panama before, but my experience in Latin America has always been pretty good as far as labor and care are concerned. No need to mention that costs are way under what I would pay back home.

I will let you know how this turns out.

    Cheers.

This is an interesting variation of the '2002' theme, and its heirloom-status makes it priceless. The movement should be an Eterna 12824 - yes, that's the progenitor of the ubiquitous ETA 2824, made to higher standards and fully capable of running within chronometer specs. (The sister family '3003' were all certified, btw).

The only thing I'm concerned about is the case: I take it, it is gilt? In that case maybe you should look to have it re-gilt by a professional galvanizer to restore it to its former glory, as it looks rather spent in your first image.

I also wondered about that, but I've seen plating look similarly tarnished from time to time and have sorted it out with nothing more than a Hagerty or Cape Cod cloth. Of course, one's not always so lucky, but then Montréal is home to RePlateIt, specialist watch platers and Peter can sort it out if not. Recommended, by the way.

Thank you very much Tomcat for the movement info. Very useful.
The case is a worry indeed. I'll have it checked and see what can be done to achieve that former glory ;)

@Habitant: If unsuccessful here in Panama, I will visit RePlateIt on my next trip to Montreal which will be in a few weeks. Go Habs Go!! Il pleut à Londres?
