EXAMPLES OF FINE GOLD PLATED P.W. MOVEMENTS

    ELGIN war time electro plate.

Waltham 6 size with thick plating allowing deco pattern on it. Walthams seem to have the most durable of U.S. movements plating.

Old 18 size ASSMANN with thick plating allowing deep engraving of lettering. High quality in all respects.

Couple of Swiss complexly engraved plated movements with plating so thin (2 microns?) they look like solid gold. Name: P1000304ax.jpg

Fine watches. I have one of the engraved and look great, it would be at the fifth picture. Do you have more information on this one?
    Thank You

Gruen did not use gold plating, or surface decoration because they sold cased p.w. only. Used gold briefly on some wartime VERITHINS. Here shown on the final GRUEN p.w. design. A couple detail movement photos of the GRUEN 1924 50th 12kt solid one here also for which a probable prototype for these I have has a poorly done gold plate on a fine mvnt. engraved like the 50th.

Is the two tone Waltham actually "gold plated"?

Not sure if fire gilt or electro plated. Not gold flashed which I hear is less than 7 microns thick electro plate.

Added here a typical thin gold flash of less than 7 microns shown on 2 of the fine HAMPDEN SPECIAL RAILWAY 18 size. One in original glass back case is near perfect, other shows ageing typical for these. The good one had only one cleaning solution exposure. artb

Here a typically fine durable plate job by Waltham and an overall fine finish job in 1869 on the 10 size Elgin.

Re: EXAMPLES OF FINE GOLD PLATED P.W. MOVEMENTS

    Hi there,

Two tone fire gilt, and no aging after 180 years. Maybe it looks a bit coarse, but consider that an average notebook display shows it 8x magnified:
