    FABRE LEUBA BIVOUAC

I recently acquired a Fabre Leuba Bivouac watch that I believe is used mostly by mountaineers? Can anyone tell me how to use its unique functions?

Cool watch!! I believe the altimeter function is sort of automatic. There is a tiny air pressure capsule inside the watch that engages the red hand.
The outer bezel (black) indicates the amount of feet x 100. So if the red hand points at 20 you should be at a 2000 ft altitude.

Looks like you're at an altitude of between 200 and 300 feet now, standard sea level. Does that seem right to you?

The barometer I'm not sure. Maybe someone on WUS has the original manual.

Very interesting watch, never seen one before.

Since it has no other crown, the seconds hand alike pointer works like as Vintage1982 described, I would second that.

See how the bezel at 760mmHG =1ATM sea level is at 12 o'clock mark. So you are at 300feet above sea level as the watch indicates.

The 100 mark on bezel is actually on the 59 min marker.
0/60 min marker is 1 and at 760mmHG-sea level.

So that center hand moves according to the pressure change and corresponds also to altitude on the bezel as altimeter. For example the least pressure on scale there is 560mmHG which corresponds to appr. 8,400 feet.

And at the other side it may also show depth according to increasing pressure under water : 790mmHG corresponds to depth 1000 feet, which might be also the limit of the watch as pressure and water-resistant.

The table below indicates air pressure at elevations below and above sea level.

Altitude Above Sea Level Absolute Barometer Absolute Atmospheric Pressure

It's mentioned as the first mechanical altimeter watch and looks like also the bezel turns according to the changes in pressure and corresponds to the right altitude. Very interesting...Thanks for sharing this wonderful thing.

    Re: FABRE LEUBA BIVOUAC

Because I have bought a Favre Leuba Bivouac from first owner, I have made some research.
    First my Favre Leuba Bivouac:

Size: 397.0 KB

    Name: CIMG0916.jpg
Views: 118
Size: 556.2 KB

As you can see, my Bivouac has a leather with genuine clasp:

Size: 551.3 KB

I wanted to know, with what kind of bracelets this watch was delivered.
I know NSA bracelets and this steel bracelet, shown above.
    And I found this ad:

    Name: 27757241rl.jpg
Views: 113
Size: 234.5 KB

In the last section, you can read, that the watch came with steel bracelet or a leather.
But I have found no picture of the watch with genuine leather in the net.

Because I have bought my watch from the son of the first owner, it was possible, that the mounted old leather bracelet was the genuine one.
It measures 21mm to 15mm (clasp), a typical 70s dimension.
But could it be original to this watch?
Because it was worn heavily, no lettering is seen.

Now I have found another NOS Favre Leuba and I have recognized the leather bracelet:

Size: 83.8 KBName: s-l1552.jpg
Views: 116
Size: 106.9 KB
    (Source: ebay.com)

Now, I am sure, that my leather bracelet is the genuine one (or an original Favre Leuba bracelet from the 60s/70s).
That is the reason, why I dig up this thread.

    Best regards,
    Peter
