Is this a fake or real Girard Perregaux?

    Hello all,

I got this watch on ebay from a reputable dealer. I only know a little bit about the watch. Can someone check the pictures out and tell me a little about it and if it's real or fake? It measures 37 mm wide without the crown and 44.5 mm long from lug to lug. Marked with the 18K gold seals on the back. Case reference #2995.It is Girard Perregaux movement with 17 Jewels. Manual
wind, adjusted. 27BF Serial #30162. Signed Girard Perregaux, Swiss. I notice that there is not a swiss or swiss made print at the bottom of the dial.

Looks like a redial; the chapter markers don't seem to line up with the indicies (although that could be a crystal artefact), and the lines in the sub-second dial are off a bit. The "gold" stamp on the back doesn't look like any official hallmark I've ever seen, but the picture isn't all that clear so I could be wrong. Movement looks nice. Nothing fancy, but decent quality.

I'd go along with AbslomRob's dial assessment. The movement is probably based on the ol' Adolf Schild Cal. AS 1130:

Crown looks like an after-market replacement. The lettering strikes me as being too blocky for original. The case and back appears to have been heavily buffed and brushed, but that may be distortion from expanding a low res picture. The question to ask is not whether it is real or fake, but what has been done to the watch since it left the factory.

I recently saw a Girard-Perregaux HF on Fleabay which had a rotor proclaiming "17 Jewels".

I thought all the HF automatics were 39 jewels?

    Is that right?

I trawled through this but couldn't find anything much one way or the other:

GP also made manual wind HF watches, though in much smaller numbers. So, to answer your question, not all had anywhere near 39 jewels.

Well, he did say something about a rotor.

At the same time, Ranfft states that even high frequency movements by GP could have 17 jewels, e.g.:

    bidfun-db Archive: Watch Movements: Girard-Perregaux 42.4

...where it states that the 39 jewel version has freewheel roller jewels.

Okay. Sorry, I didn't put it very well.

My understanding was that, among the HF movements, all the hand winds had 17 jewels and all the automatics had 39.

    Is this right?

So an automatic with "17 Jewels" on the rotor is either using a replacement rotor or possibly a franken...?

Without pictures, you'd be as far ahead to flip a coin as ask. Most companies sold a wide range of products to meet the interests of as many customers as possible, and the exact configuration of the various models could easily have switched from year to year.

Not the way I read the information in Ranfft. He states quite clearly that the Cal. GP 42.4 - which only comes as an automatic - can have 17 or 39 jewels.
