    German Gruen p.w.

Unknown to this Gruen p.w. collector is this small low cost but very good quality w.w. movement pocket watch. Very substantial construction with thick machined rigid back and good quality throughout. Smaller then the 10 size (17 ligne). Marked as German made with Gruen marked movement. Another similar CARAVELLE has a nice looking Japan marked movement. artb

    Nice find ArtB .
Never seen this watch and its marked with "West germany" therefore its made between 1945 and 1990 during the area BRD and DDR excist. The only centers in West Germany were a lot of watches were build was the aeras around Pforzheim and Villingen-Schwenningen. Therefore the 'making of' is probably out of the black forrest.
But its only the glas ..the dial doe't seem to match and a sidewinder is really unusual.

    Kind regards Silke

Hi Art, looks to be 'N0' above right of 'unadjusted' on the Caravelle, making it 1970.
I see lots of newspaper ads for p/w's in the '70's, even a Bulova ad featuring their p/w's being used in the movie "Posse" with Kirk Douglas.
    Both ads from 1975.

AetB I always think positive and all watches have had their customers and lovers. Of course in your case its looks a bid "hand made" but it was during the aera the gruen story ends. I don't know if they ever build such handwinders but if they do it would possible that they made a smal cooperation with stock movements to generate money. Grun wasn't a big player and well known company on the continent as in the USA. Therefore I doupt its a commercial fake even if it looks not quite fit.
The caravelle is a typical example out of this aera and the cases are often build by specialized companies therefore I didn't see here a direct match. I knew a guy who loves the 70/80 ties and owned by the time about 50 of those watches for decoration until he looked the first time on the movements. It can be very surprising what you can see inside . The majority was PUW and DUROVE but some rare by wrist watch collectors searched calibers also. It was the aera of quarts crisis and crazy things happen.

    KInd regards Silke
