    Girard Perregaux SeaHawk 1960s

    Greetings WUSers,

I inherited this Girard Perregaux Sea Hawk, I believe it dates from the mid-late 1960s. It is manual wind, but I've not opened to see the movement because you need to go in through the crystal/face on this one (I think), a bit above my pay grade.

I'd love your comments, especially if you know anything about GP from this era.

    Many thanks,
    MD

Mbd26...Hello! I have owned a GP just like this one, and ( as a hobbyist, with many years experience ) have worked on several GP's. They are always very nice, good quality watches. I think GP is quite similar to Longines / Omega / Bulova / etc...of course, you'll encounter different opinions here (!), but from what I've seen of the internal construction of these watches, they all made movements that were in the same league...good materials, well-designed & finished, and a watch that will run for many years with good servicing.

Your Sea-Hawk is a bit unusual in GP's choice of blackened hands and markers...I, myself, prefer something not quite so 'austere', but the design is very clean and easy to read.

Although I'm not aware of the current market values for your GP, I reckon that it should be above that , say, of a like-featured Bulova, and less than a Longines, with Omega almost always above them all. The markets come and go...a good GP, though, should do very well against all competition. Enjoy! Michael.

Thank you both for your replies. At only 32mm, the lume points are barely visible to the naked eye, but the hands are a different story. I'd love to see an image of an original one of these to see the difference.

    Nice looking Sea Hawk.

I've long been a fan of G-P and I enjoy working on them. Well made watches for the prices they are currently going for.

If that is a redial, whoever did it got the "Sea Hawk" logo down pretty good.

Here's one of mine in 14k on the original Speidel calendar band...

And another shot on a little more contemporary leather strap...

It's powered by a nice manual wind, AS based movement.

Lovely! Interesting how the hyphen shows up on my dial and your movement, but not your dial. When do you think yours dates from? Do you access the movement from the back, or through the dial?

laikrodukas...are you sure about the dial? I have seen other GP's that are the same...the one I owned certainly looked Original ( and I've seen my share of redials!) and I have seen images of other SeaHawks with the same finish. I will allow, though, that the image here--especially, the hour hand--does look a bit redone! Michael.

Does this help? In general, the name Girard-Perregaux was hyphenated, except when printed on two lines, as in smaller watches. And in this watch, similar to yours, you can see what the hands ought to look like, "white" as they call them, with a luminescent infill. I suspect your markers have been re-painted, too, I've never seen them in black. And the lume dots look a bit DIY on yours. Typically, they were quite fine. Overall, the solidness of the dial finish and the other details lead me to think that it was probably redone and the hands re-painted to disguise corrosion.

    Thanks.

There is an inscription on the back that dates it to the early 70s.

    It's a front-loader case also.
