Gold plated Vintage wristwatches / SS back?

    Hi Guys
Is it common with vintage wristwatches to have a Gold plated case and a Stainless Steel back? Looking at several name brands from the 19430's-1950's on Ebay but concerned before bidding.
    thanks
    Chuck

Absolutely. Nearly - but not quite - all gold plated cases have SS backs. I think it was because the sweat and friction from the wrist would remove thin GP quite quickly. Conversely, solid gold cases have a solid gold back - otherwise they could not be sold as 'solid gold'.

If you see a watch described as 'it might be solid gold, I'm not sure' with a steel back then it will be plated.

From what I've found, the SS back thing started in the 1940s. Prior to that, GP (ie RGP or GF) watches had the same material for the case back.

Also, I HAVE seen several watches with hallmarked solid gold case tops and SS backs.

I have 2 gold filled watches from the 50's that have gold filled backs as well. Just to emphasize the not all had stainless backs statement above.

Yes - sorry I wasn't thinking that far back.

Have you? I stand corrected then.
