    Gratuitous JLC Memovox pics

The Memovox is in for service, and my watchmaker took some photos for me. I have the dial to try a little clean-up, and the rest is getting the spa treatment. Thought I'd share some pics, and a nice turn of luck at the end of this post.

    Some dial close-ups:

A little light elbow grease seems to be working combined with a lint proof make-up swab, but pictures of the dial after tonight's cleaning will come tomorrow morning with better light. Worst case scenario (meaning if I screw it up) is that it goes back to Le Sentier so they can work their magic on it. The caseback is in good shape, and this is an uncommon model - stainless back with a solid 14K case.

Of course, if you have the caseback off you have to have a movement shot, right?

Here's the bonus - any JLC with a serial number from 1,770,000 to 1,850,000 was made in 1966 so it's another birth year watch for the box.

why do alarm always have the little post in the caseback? is it to cause greater sound reverberation? or is it a striker post?

Yep, the hammer has to hit something - vibration is then transmitted to the back. Some also use a double back to amplify the sound (Vulcain cricket and some others) - but that was patented, so most do not.

The serial number dates it to 1953. That's a caliber P489/1 as you can see on the edge of the movement. The "P" is for Parachoc shock protection. This movement was used from 1950 into 1958 before being discontinued, leaving the only remaining manual wind calibers from the 814 series.

That's my favorite case reference of the early Memovoxes - the 3155. Love the ribbon lugs, and the size (@ 33 mm) is very nice on my wrist.

Thanks! I was not able to date it exactly, but thought the 489/1 had not been built that long.

    You're welcome!

Took a few pics as promised. The dial came up pretty nice. The markers and logo are a bit shinier.

There's no way to get some of the spots off unless the whole thing is stripped and redone. No worries though, one day I'll ship it to Le Sentier for restoration since I already know what a fantastic job they do. For now, this is certainly good enough to wear. A couple post cleaning close ups of the trouble spots:

    Nah, don't like it!!!! lol

Lovely watch Dennis, and the dial clean up looks pretty good to me A full dial resto from JLC would be pretty serious $$'s I'd imagine??

The movement also looks very nice

Look forward to the 'completed' piccys
