Gold color variety was popular for jewelry in 1890's. Known as Black Hills gold since colorful varieties occurred naturally in the S. Dakota mine. Colored gold alloys had a long history in European jewelry. A difficult color to obtain is green (also hard to photograph) so attempting here to show a few watch cases using green gold alloy. Fred Gruen and his Gruen Watch Case Co. (Gruen derived from German word for green) made cases in 14k only for best green color. One of his personal gifts is a 50th to a commercial property agent Allan Collier friend of his in Cincinnati that is specially made thick heavy unusual pentagon form green gold case. He also liked to use complex pattern solid and plated metal dials as shown here. Include a few others that are strong green color examples. artb
