    Hamilton 'Austin'???

Looking at the following watch: Mens Vintage Hamilton 10K Yellow Gold Filled Wrist Watch 17 Jewels Cal 980 Runs | eBay

I believe I have it identified as an Austin, circa 1949. Concerned about the 'split' in the back. Not sure what it would cost to fix. Help appreciated.

I'm not certain of hamilton values as I don't own any. But to me, that looks a little high priced for a case in such bad shape.

bsshog40, I agree. Learning curve is fairly steep for me at this time. Trying to determine seriousness of split case. Thanks.

Ask the seller if the wearthrough is actually a hole or is just into the base metal. A watch maker can solder that section with some non-lead based solder. If you are particularly interested in the Austin model you could wait for a better condition one or make a lower offer on the watch. That is the beauty of the offer system some sellers use. Just be fair in your offer.

Well not only the split in back but there is worn plating on edges in the front also. I couldn't justify myself paying that much for something that would have to be replated. I can deal with servicing a movement, but I like better looking cases.

Btw that model is not the Austin. That is a Wilshire.

That model is a Hamilton Essex. I have two of these. Very similar to Wilshire. I am a fan of this model although I prefer the rose gold filled one. These come up often enough and I have seen them go for less. In very good shape they go for more. I do think the case would deter me also.
