    Hamilton gold pocket watch

Please pardon the generic title, I am seeking information on a pocket watch I found locally. While I am fairly knowledgeable about modern wristwatches, I am completely ignorant when it comes to vintage pieces. I would like to know some history about the watch and the movement, original movement, redial etc., and also a general idea on its value and of course it's authenticity. I am not looking for a valuation as I know that's not allowed but just a ballpark idea, low to high let's say. Pictures are below and thanks in advance for your input.

Please excuse the ugly fingers in the second shot, and thanks again.

I can't read the serial number very well. This is the closest I can get 3121471 to reading yours. You can use the link I just provided to enter the correct serial number that is there on your movement. This will give you info on your watch. More than likely, this is either a gold filled or gold plated watch also as I'm not seeing any Silver or Gold hallmarks. Unless I'm missing them somewhere. After you find your correct model, then you can search the web and ebay to see what they are selling for to help you in value.

From the picture it looks to be a 17 jewel Hamilton 917. The regulator whip is missing. The dial looks right. The case looks right. As to the case being gold or plate will only be determined if you show us the inside of the outer case back.

Thanks for the replies guys, what is the regulator whip?, pardon my ignorance. Also, the engraving is on the inside of the outer case back I thought. I didn't see any hallmarks but it does state on the outside of the case back "Hamilton 14 carat gold" thanks again.

The pointer to adjust the speed would have a spring that goes around it. There would also be a screw to do a fine adjustment. look at a picture of a Hamilton 992.

I think the movement states "916" (rather than 917). It is supposed to look like this, including the "whip" on the balance cock:

Right you are. I could see the 91. 916 is a different plate design all together. The 917 is part of a series of 10 size that includes the 921 and 923.

Thanks again for the input, I feel dumb not noticing the regulator whip was missing and also not knowing what it was called. I'll go back and get a better picture of the movement this week but from what I've seen on eBay I think the asking price is way too high even to negotiate.

Don't you hate that? People say make an offer and I think, what I think it's worth is about 80% of what you have it priced at so it's hard for me to make an offer with out really insulting you.

    Re: Hamilton gold pocket watch

I never mind people who offer 80%. That seems fair almost all of the time. The issue I have is when you have a watch that is worth $250 and the guy offers you $75. I will usually not respond to the offer at all just so I don't have to waste my time for a few days with further offers form him. I can understand offering half on a watch that clearly is only worth that and the buyer is unreasonable. But do a little research first. If there have been 20 others sold like it and the seller's price is to the lower end of the price scale, why offer half of that? I know people like a bargain but that is just pure hope that the seller knows nothing and that you can take advantage of their lack of knowledge.
