    Help with datejust purchase

Looking for feedback on a vintage datejust listed for sale, I placed a deposit on the watch because i love the look but im concerned if the dial is accurate to the year.

The listing dates the watch 1958 but mentions that the model number is a 1601, is that possible? I thought datejust ref 1601 started in 1960. Should this be a ref 6605 based on year of the serial number?

My other concern is the dial print under the Rolex crown, is it just me or does the Text seem a bit low under the crown logo?

The seller has 400 plus good reviews on ebay with a 100 percent good rating and their website looks great in my opinion.

I love the watch but im concerned any help would be much appreciated.

Dial appears to be either fake or repainted. Are there photos of the areas between the lugs?

Thank you for your response, the listing does mentions that it has been refinished.

I would post the link but im too new and I dont have enough post

They dont have pictures between the lugs, but they do mention the serial number as: 937,695. I tried bobs website and it mentions that this serial number can be either from 1953 or 1963, but the listing says 1958.

I love the look of the watch but its selling for 7k US dollars so i want to make sure this is genuine and worth the purchase price.

It's from 1963. But you also want to see the reference number between the other lugs. I wouldn't pay much for a watch with a refinished dial, the collectible value is virtually zero.

Thank you badbackdan, i just emailed the seller asking for pictures between the lugs and for clarification on the year.

I made a deposit, but im sure i could work something out with the seller. Any suggestions on how much would be a fair price for this piece.

This is hard for me to answer. This is primarily a site for vintage collectors, and generally we don't choose to buy watches with refinished dials, especially not for big bucks. I don't know how to value it, and personally I wouldn't buy it.

Thank you, that helps me because i love the look of the watch but there are nice looking watches out there for much cheaper. I was able to justify the price thinking it was something special and worth it in the long run.

Ill wait for a reply from the seller and go from there.

    Re: Help with datejust purchase

Here are a couple of recent auctions for gold 1601 references. They were both in the $7k range, but they seem legit (except for the bracelet on the second one). Since the original dial is often said to represent 30-40% of the watch's value, my sense is that $7k is a lot to pay for a redialed watch, even one that is fairly rare. Personally, I don't like the way the dial looks, because it looks fake. And re-sale would be very difficult.

Not going to lie I am bummed out, it sucks when you think you found the watch that checks all your boxes only to find out its no good but Im grateful for the honest feedback, it would be much worse to pay soo much for something that is considered worthless.
