    Help to identify Smiths watch

    Hello,
I've just picked up an old Smiths wristwatch from a local antique shop and I'm hoping someone may be able to tell me something about it...

    It says on the dial:
    SMITHS
    JEWELLED

    MADE IN GT BRITAIN

It's running great so far and its actually quite attractive, although I suspect it has no real value, but that's not why I bought it. Name: IMG_20180222_144315.jpg

Can anyone tell me how old it may be?

I guess when it says "jewelled" on the face without specifying a quantity it's not got very many!

    Thanks in advance.
    Phil.

I would say its late 1960s and attractive with the rarer black dial, made in Wales and probably using a 7 jeweled lever movement, not Smiths finest hour but by far not their worst either.

    Help to identify Smiths watch

Nice watch, Phil, similar to and earlier than mine (note: shock-protected rather than proof on yours)

And yes to ‘jewelled’ - it shows nice British restraint

We worked out that mine is 1970
There’s a book with reprints of some old Smiths catalogues that might help you pin it down
I can’t recall the title offhand, but the details are in the Smiths thread I started in 2013:
    https://forums.watchuseek.com/f71/sho.../topics/848708

It’s also possible someone’s posted up something similar there - I’ve been away from the forum for 2 years

Good luck with your hunt for more info, and enjoy the watch!

The publisher’s website is no longer at the link from that thread.

Here’s some info to help track the book down

Smiths Watches by Barrie Smith, Pierhead Publications Sep 2009
    ISBN 978-1-904661-09-2

It’s quite a bare bones book, with reprints of some catalogue pages, but a start

Re: Help to identify Smiths watch

Thank you very much for the information.
That's a lovely looking watch you have there.
It's the first British watch in my collection so I had to buy it.
It's kept great time all day, though I suspect it needs a service..
Are the Smiths movements reliable? (I guess that's a stupid question to ask when a near 50 year old watch is still running!)
I will have to find a nice strap to go with it. I don't think the current strap does it any favours.

I will look up that thread!
    Thanks again!

    Thanks Phil

And yes, I’ve owned a few, both the Welsh built ones, and an English made W10 that is my birthyear watch (I was 50 last year
    Still running fine
