Help identifying watch movement inside JW Benson

    Hi all,

This is my very first post, so if it belongs somewhere else please do let me know. Have been following watchuseek for years, picking up advice on various Ebay obsessions / junk for many years, so a very warm hello to you all.

I'm trying to find out what this movement is, currently inside an old JW Benson 1930s 'tank' watch. I assume it's not original as its not signed anywhere.

Any of you clever folks have any ideas?

    Many thanks for any help!

    Hi and welcome
I think you have a nice Gallet Electa movement there.
    Take a look here:
    Watch Movement Identification

sorry, it is not an extensive check, but I recognize some Electa/Gallet features

    Hi,

What makes you think this movement is not original to the watch?
I think it probably is, looks right and correct age, looks familiar as do many movements but positive
ID might mean trawling through Ranffts data base.

Adam, for mine and others education could you please point out the 'Electa/Gallet features' that you recognise, thank you very much.

Re: Help identifying watch movement inside JW Benson

    Hi there,

In my own experience, JW Benson often used 'unsigned' movements. I have three from this era. In my case, two are unsigned Cyma/Tavannes, the other is a signed Marc Favre. As a retailer Benson 'made up' watches as suited them, so would have been reasonably relaxed where they got their movements from (albeit very high quality).

Remember, too, that jewellers in those days were bigger brands than watch companies. Rolex, to pluck a name out of the air, were once sold under many names (Marconi, Solar Aqua and so on) and often dedicated to retail jewellers (Solar Aqua was a brand of Eatons of Canada, for instance). Impossible to imagine now. So today we think of Cyma watches as a big brand, but then we may have thought of JW Benson.

Use the advanced feature on Ranfft, you'll find it there.

Hi and Welcome...I would agree that the movement is probably original...It looks like an FHF to me (with a modified bridge layout). But I have been working on a lot of FHF lately - so they are in the front of my mind.

How about an overall pic of the watch so we can all enjoy?

Good luck on IDing the movement.

Re: Help identifying watch movement inside JW Benson

Thanks so much for your help folks - I really appreciate it, such a great forum. I don't own the watch yet, but I'd dearly like to. Here's the face. I assumed JW Benson made their own movements as have seen a couple of signed ones. What do you think of them, as watches, were they mid-range or high end, or somewhere in between?
