Help Needed - American Waltham Woerds Patents

I purchased this watch last year, tucked it away in the safe, and didn't really take a close look at the watch movement until a few months ago when I noticed the "Woerds Patents" under the balance. My watch repair guy and I reviewed the CPG watch guide and narrowed the watch down to a 1872 model with the serial number dating the movement to 1881. I pulled the watch out this morning to give it some time and thought I'd snap some pictures and get some more information on the watch other than what I read in the guide.

Here's a few pictures that I hope will help -

Your watch is a 14 size 1874 model, and not an 1872 model(the 1872 has two exposed winding wheels).

The case on yours is killer!

That explains it and will keep me busy doing some research. I remember the first time I took pictures of the watch and the case just came alive on the screen.

    Thanks for the help!

I have 8s or 10size that look identical. Older one has patent marking 2 million+ serial does not. Patent for escapement design? Woerd was very influential as designer and production management of early American watches and the industry. His biography is very interesting.

I hesitate often to include stuff from my 50 year collection that was obtained cheaply that may seem like bragging. Appreciate you not assuming one-up-manship. Add a couple Waltham chronographs that are likely same age as yours with same patent marking. I am unsure what movement function the patent was for. Apparently not for chronograph design? Escapement?

Re: Help Needed - American Waltham Woerds Patents

Woerd was a fairly prolific inventor, but this particular Woerd's Patent(the one marked under the balance wheel) is for the square roller jewel. Many watches so-fitted have had their roller jewel replaced by a typical round or half-round jewel over the years by an unknowing watchmaker, or simply for lack of parts availability. Here's a pair of photos I've posted here before showing the square jewel and the corresponding pallet fork. This particular watch is an 1872 model, but I know of this marking on 1870 and 1874 models, and probably others that I'm forgetting at the moment.
