    Help with Universal Geneve Compax

    Hi everyone,

I am a first-time poster and am delving into the market for my first vintage piece - in particular a manual wind chronograph. I was particularly interested in this UG Compax which the seller said was all original parts and solid gold. Being a little skittish considering it is my first foray into the vintage market - I was wondering whether some trained eyes could help me verify a few things. Attached are photos of the piece.
    1. Is this solid rose gold as opposed to plated?
    2. Is this the original dial? It was said by the dealer that the dial was cleaned in 1980 but was still original
    Thank you very much!

    Welcome to watchuseek.

Normally one needs to see the inside of the case-back to distinguish between solid gold and gold-plate. The markings there will make it clear. My guess is that this is solid gold, but you should ask for the proper photos to be sure.

Most likely this is a re-dial. The running seconds sub-dial (on the left) looks particularly bad, and I would have expected to see "UNI-COMPAX" on the lower part of the dial. When a seller says the dial has been "cleaned", it's extremely suspicious, since dials generally can't really be cleaned.

Personally, I would not buy this example.

Edit: I just wanted to point out that most likely this is the original dial, which is what you actually asked, but it has been refinished (i.e. repainted). That's what is meant by a "re-dial". So the seller may have been playing subtle games with the truth when saying that the dial was cleaned but original.
