    Help With Vintage Gallet Chronograph

    Hi Everyone,

I just bought a vintage Gallet chronograph that seemed to be a very good for the price, but I am hoping to confirm that thought and get some more information on this watch based off of some pictures I have of it. Also, as can be seen from the pictures, one of the caps of the pusher buttons is missing and I'm wondering if someone could offer advice as to where I can get a replacement. I live in NYC, and am hoping Central Watch in Grand Central Station can help me out with this, but I am not sure about how that will go.

Any information on the watch would be greatly appreciated though. I bought it for $218 USD, which again, I thought was a good deal but am unsure.

    Thanks for the help,

    Very nice, very reasonable.

I know a good, reasonable watch repair guy in NY. Here is his site, with views of all his restorations. Very reasonable prices.

Congratulations - that looks to be a very nice watch with beautiful even patina and a rock-solid Venus 188 movement. Replacement of the pusher cap should not be a big deal - normally, each good watchmaker (to whom you're going to bring the watch anyway for a decent service) should be able to replace it. These are standard parts, you see?

The Venus 188 was built in order for Venus to compete with Landeron and it became the basis for the hugely successful Valjoux 773x family of chronograph movements after Valjoux (who until then had no indigenous cam-operated chronograph movement) bought it from the Venus bankruptcy in 1963. I had no idea the Venus 188 was used in Gallets (who were more in the high-end chronograph business) but obviously Gallet had to take up the fight for consumers' money at the entry level of the chronograph market as well

So a very interesting, historically significant watch - again, congratulations!

    Best,
    Tomcat

PS: exactly how reasonable your price was you'll find out when using Google Image Search

Really nice Gallet Chrono as everyone has corroborated - am I correct in assuming this was a shop or non-EB buy ? I monitor Gallet and Electa/Gallet pretty regularly and have not seen as good a buy as this on EB, congrats, Scott

Sorry I'm getting back to late here, it actually was an eBay purchase. There was only one other person bidding on the watch too, which was a huge surprise to me. Also, the fact that no one else was bidding on it left me a little concerned that I was missing something, so I posted here to make sure everything looked all right.

You are not missing anything. You will know the real price after cleaning, servicing, button fixing and maybe other issue fixing

Nice buy! Lucky guy... of course, as laikrodukas says, you'll soon find out the true cost. I like the look of bobbee's recommendation of AWB repair website; it would be interesting to see his take on things.

Thanks ! Again nice watch - One thing I need to verify, and I'm not sure of other's experiences, I use EB a lot on my phone but I have a hypothesis now to be confirmed that an EB search on an iphone doesn't produce as extensive a set of watches as a desktop search, cet par, has anyone else experienced this ? Then again maybe I'm not searching enough to not see your watch or lastly, maybe I'm an idiot ! Cheers, Scott
