Size: 1.23 MBHi. My first posting on Vintage Pocket Watches. I have found a pocket Watch which belonged to my Late stepfather, around 40+ years ago. Chris Robinson was a UnderManager in the Lancashire and Cumbrian Coalfields until his death in 1988. I was a young Miner in 1972 at Haig Colliery Whitehaven when i saw this actual watch and heavy chains!!, attached to his Pit overalls whilst underground. It still works with hardly any damage at all. Its a key wind-up and thats all i know. No Brand, No Model or id marks. May be Silver with unmarked (id) dial. I hope the images i have posted will assist you. Thank you very much for your time. reynard

It looks like an english center-seconds chronograph from the mid 1800s (I can't make out the hallmarks, but if you can get a more detailed picture of the inside caseback, we can probably give you a firmer date). The should be a slide along the case somewhere that stops and starts the movement. It's an all-or-nothing thing; stopping the second hand stops the entire movement. The markings around the outside of the dial allow you to measure in 300th of a minute. I suspect its a fusee driven movement. Solid silver (.925).

Definitely Swiss, note the Swiss bear hallmarks for sterling silver. I seriously doubt that it's a fusee.

On reflection, of course you are right - not a fusee.

I simply looked at the barrel arbor and the key arbor - but they are of course too close together. What it is, is a going barrel with an extra gear so that it winds in the same direction as a traditional fusee.

    Boy is my face red.

Re: Help: What is this Pocket Watch

Great looking watch I can't help on the mechanism, but yes it is Swiss .935 hallmarked silver case, which is a little bit higher grade than the English .925 Sterling Silver. Unfortunately the Swiss don't have a date system for their hallmarks and neither is there an import mark for the UK so I suspect that this was an unofficial, personal import, which is to say it wasn't sold in the UK. If it was sold in the UK without a UK hallmark it couldn't (or perhaps shouldn't) have been described as Silver so would have sold for a lower value.
