    Heuer 1553

First post so apologies if I am breaking any protocol.

I am looking to purchase a new watch and came across a watch described as " RARE VINTAGE HEUER CARRERA CHRONOGRAPH 1553 S ST. STEEL, AUTOMATIC, CAL. 15". I am fairly new to watch buying, especially vintage, but really like the aesthetics of this piece so I'm trying get comfortable with buying online and buying a vintage watch. Any pointers on show stoppers I should pay attention to? Anyone have any direct feedback on this watch or seller (link below)? Is this a watch I can wear is it meant more for collectors?

Thanks very much! Looking forward to learning more.

Hi and welcome. NO protocols broken at all.
That is a very nice watch. How "rare" is is I got no idea - the word "rare" is used as much as "wristwatch" - so take that with a pinch of salt.
Watch looks 100% correct, original and genuine.
Probably from 70s or 80s (based on automatic - invented 1969) - a liitle research could check.

Price 'seems' high to me, 5 offers all declined (so others seem to think its high)
Try doing an advanced search including sold listing and WW.
See what price they go for.

    Hope that helps

Thanks for the insight and for helping find the comp. Didn’t know you could search closed auctions. Agree that this price looks high in comparison.

Are these watches typically able to be worn and stand up to normal wear and tear or are they destined for a drawer?

    Thanks again!

    well.....
It is totally impossible to compare the two watches here - I am not a Heuer Collector, but subtle differences in age, condition and patina make for HUGE price disparities w/ the Carrera models; I would suggest to raise that question in a forum with a relevant Heuer Collector base ?

Calling the Breitling/Heuer/Bueren Cal. 11/12/15 "durable and wearable" is a bit of a stretch, you have to make sure your modular microrotor chronograph is always well serviced and it is good to have a knowledgeable watchmaker who keeps some spare parts stock, as these are notoriously hard to find; I keep a basic stock of relevant parts myself to make sure my Cal 11/12/14/15 will have a long and healthy life.

I asked Arno Hasslinger where he got his watches serviced and he smiled. It is important beyond doubt. (Arno said he was retired... oh well.)

These Heuers were certainly INTENDED to be durable...
