How to date a "Tärnan" vintage watch

    Hi Everyone!

Is there a way to identify and date a TÄRNAN vintage watch. I have been searching quite a lot online to find a serial number database, but with no success so far.

    Any clue?

    Thanks!

The name was registered in Sweden in 1943...so sometime after that? Some pictures would help; we can often date watches by style and markings. Serial numbers (especially on cases) aren't usually useful for any but the big brands.

    Many thanks, AbslomRob!

I bought the watch yesterday, but haven't got it yet. The seller claims it is from 1962, but I'm wondering how he could tell that. The only pic I got so far is the following.

Thanks again for your help! Cheers!

    1960s sounds about right.

Only way for him to know for sure if he is the original owner?

    Cheers

Thanks a lot! At least, the decade seems to be correct! (1960s). I understand that it is difficult to exactly date these lower-end vintage watches. But it is at least nice to have a rough idea.

    Thanks again!

Re: How to date a "Tärnan" vintage watch

As to serial numbers, they're usually a dead end- only a few manufacturers have proper records, in case of larger companies no longer in existence ranges of serial numbers can be established- very, very inaccurately though- by finding examples engraved with the date the watch was presented to its original owner. Or, if it is known when particular models were introduced and discontinued, a few such examples from different decades might also be helpful. But for the smaller brands, no matter if it is a private label or one of the somehow recognizable budget brands (dozens of which were out there), a serial number is as good as if it wasn't there at all.

Re: How to date a "Tärnan" vintage watch

Tärnan (Tern) was a sub brand to ASU (Aktiebolaget Svenska Urdepoten) and were populare in the 50's and 60's, in the 70's they were phased out but some Tärnan quartz watches were made with Ricoh movements. In the 60's they added the tärnan bird as a logo to some watches as well so going by the design I'd say late 50's (58-60).
