Hi Chaps,
Think I know some of your views on this.... but this watch has arrived and needs some TLC....
Mappin & Webb 'Campaign' watch.... as advertised:
This site also discusses how these watches were sold privately to officers in the 1st world war.... not to say all were sold to military personnel!!!
WRISTLETS
As the image shows on the link... I think it shows what the cathedral hands, lumed, should look like!
Not the easiest hallmark to make out... but think its 'a' for 1916.... London import mark and sponsor AB for Arthur Baume... which is the same as my Longines Borgel! Also has the same 13.34 Cal movement!
Back to the question as stated in the title..... The watch needs some work... balance/spring seem ok, but cant wind it due to the lack of stem/crown! Dial also has a pretty bad chip at '10' and there is a crack in the crystal..... and the wrong hands.... other than that, its perfect!!
So... as you can see, the silver case is pretty tarnished.... If it had a worn crown that matched the case in some way... I might keep it as it is.... but, with a new crown, I think the case will need a clean - not polished to a high shine, nor to take out any dinks... but back to a silver colour... Or, should I leave it alone!!??
