    Howard mechanical watch.

Hi, I am new here, and I have this mechanical pocket watch. When I open it up, it says E. Howard Watch co. (I am assuming this is the serial number.) 59511, then Boston USA. Then near the bottom it says: Pat'd 21, 3 pos. temp. 17J ( I think that means 17 jewels). But when I lay it on its back with the face up, it stops every minuet or 2. I have no idea what is wrong with it, can someone help? Thanks.

It could be a few things from problems with the balance wheel to just needing a service. Hard to say. Maybe a picture of the movement might help the more experienced members here help you better.

Welcome to the forums! Cool watch. Howard had some very nifty looking movements. The movement aesthetics of the Edward Howard line are one of the major design influences of RGM's 801 movement...

Welcome to WUS! Nice looking watch, especially the dial and hands. From what little information I can find online it looks like your Howard is a later model produced some time after the patent date of 1921. The movement is known as a Thin Model and came in 17, 19 and 21 jewel versions. The serial number is apparently not reliable for establishing a specific date for your watch. However that movement was made from 1921 to 1930 and used serial numbers from 1001 to 63,500. The 17 jewel movement was the most popular with 44,500 made, followed by 9,500 21 jewel and 5,000 19 jewel movements.

The original E. Howard watch company brand was purchased by Keystone Watch Case Company in 1902. Howard watches made by them are commonly known as Keystone Howard watches.

Hard to tell what is wrong, but could be a damaged balance jewel or pivot. Or just totally dried out oil.

It looks like an E. Howard "Thin Model", made around 1921. Are there any other markings on the case?
