I went in, there were a few cheap ladies quartz fashion watches in the display case, so I asked if they had any mens watches. The lady behind the counter rummaged around the back room for a bit, and came out with several fairly standard, modern quartzes, and the one I ended up buying. "They'll need batteries", she warned me. "How much are they without"? I asked. "Oh, £2 each". So I reserved the one I wanted, went to the bank, returned to the shop and bought it.
So, after that essay, here's my new watch. Okay, it's a Timex. But it has its original box, the gold-plated case is damn near perfect, and it has perhaps the best-finished movement ever fitted to a Timex. And it cost me less than the price of a decent cup of coffee.
I do feel a little guilty that I could have paid more, so I've decided if I do eventually sell it, I'll give half of the proceeds back to that charity, so everyone wins.
