    I think I have Gandhi's watch?

Quite the title huh! Well its accurate I recently purchased this watch from a good friend who was convinced it belonged to Gandhi, however he doesn't remember when it was purchased or who he purchased it from. So there is almost no Provence ... Which is why I turn to you! The internet for thoughts and opinions as well as what I should even do with it? Thank you for your time.

If it really is Mahatma Ghandi's watch then I hope you have it insured, it maybe wouldn't be one to crack open and tinker with...

This is another interesting article about his watches.

Do you have any information about how your friend got hold of the watch or what they say is the background behind it? I'm guessing that if it was really his watch you'd know about it as it would be something that was highly sought after and maybe not the kind of thing that you'd just find somewhere but you never know.

Interesting, but very doubtful that he would have accepted a gold watch. He did like watches, but they tended to be utilitarian.

My thoughts were it was presented to him and he either declined it or gave it to someone else. Because never mind the fact it has the description the watch looks like its never been worn. So someone may have not used it for that reason. Again this is all speculation at the moment.

If indeed it turns out to be one of Gandhi's watches, that would a priceless item to own! I hope it works out for you.

Huh. I've never seen another Wittnauer that matched the lugs on mine, and here one is. Mine's also 14kt.

Ranfft has an example of that movement from 1948, so that fits, at least.

    Re: I think I have Gandhi's watch?

In general, the question on these things is never whether it really belonged to XYZ, it's a question of whether it can be proven beyond reasonable doubt that it belonged to XYZ. So, start a literature search, ask his family to search for the box that watch came in, etc. etc. - and if you are successful, you are famous and/or (potentially) rich. But the chances of that are pretty low, I'm afraid.....

The sad truth is that it's easy to engrave any ol' watch with any ol' caption. I haven't seen many "famous caption" watches yet but I'm sure once the Argentinians and Ukrainians find a way of convincing people on fleabay of their authenticity, they will start popping up like mushrooms there.

    Good luck in your quest.

G.W. Angers: George W. Angers Memorial Award
The above is something to do with philately, the collection of mail stamps.

K.L.T.= Kulithalai, a town in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. There is a Mahatma Gandhi Youth club there, and a statue of Gandhi on Peralamman Koli Street.
The above may have nothing to do with the provenance.

I HAVE found a couple of references to CIPEX that mention stamps and other philatelic items, so possible connection with Mr. Angers above.
