    Illinois Wristwatch stopping...!

Hello! A quick question: An Illinois "0" size movement, 17J, SN 5,332,XXX, runs dial- up, dial-down, but slows / stops when 12- up. What do you reckon is going on? Nice grade of Illinois...Thanks! Michael.

Just a guess.... broken or cracked jewel on balance or worn balance pivots?

There's absolutely no way to reliably diagnose a watch long distance. It could be any of many things.

    Re: Illinois Wristwatch stopping...!

Hello! Of course, I agree...many things can be happening...I was hoping that someone would be able to narrow my search...I'm going to take a look at the movement in a day or so, & I'm thinking that there's excessive balance end shake and/or side shake. Once again: I really do realize how many gremlins may be lurking in a watch, and I do not expect a Watchuseek Wizard to exorcise them VIA the Magic of the Internet: but, really, in the World I inhabit, a bit of bench time with the watch(es) in question, should allow a kind soul to mention a 'most likely' area to examine, yes..?! Thanks. Michael. ps: I know that I will always send along a bit of help to someone wondering what his/her problem may be...it's a start, and, hopefully, will do no harm!

Someone with a bit of bench time would almost certainly advise a strip and examination of the movement. Why are you restricting the issue to just the balance?

Thanks, marks55...those sound entirely possible, and I'll be sure to take a close look when I examine the watch. I usually can find the problem(s) rather quickly, but it seems a good idea to ask what others think. Thanks for your time. Michael.

Just out of curiosity, what Illinois wristwatch has an 0-sized movement? Is this a PW conversion or perhaps an early Trench watch? Or might it be a case from the Illinois Watch Case Company?
