    India Ebay Watch sellers?

I'm usually just browsing vintage watches on the bay, and I always see these watches being sold from India. They all look refurbished and usually always have active bids on them. One seller I was looking at today has a bunch of these for sale. The red flags I get from him is 11 feedback and member since april 2015. So has anyone ever bought one of these watches from india and have any showed up with any original contents to the named brand? I see tissots, roamers, etc..... Just curious! Thanks, Bobby

My advice is steer way clear. India has a thriving market of frankened watches. There may be a few legit watches coming out, but they're like finding a needle in a haystack.

    A bit unfair

India due to the nature of its climate is very harsh on watches, therefore dials and even SS cases get distressed.
Indian sellers tend to rework the dials.

But they are not a country of 'Franken' watch sellers.

    Just reworked dials

    Re: India Ebay Watch sellers?

There are a lot of refurbished, and especially re-painted (in odd colors) dials from many sellers. There are "Frankenwatches", made up from several watch parts to more one that will be sold. But, as has been said many times on this forum, buy the seller, not the watch. We cannot generalize about sellers from any one country. There are good and bad sellers everywhere. Some avoid certain countries, but I see a trend where the listed country is not the country of origin for the item. Just check out the seller feedback and watch description, and be sure of what you are getting. Have the seller answer specific questions you have about the watch. You have to be very specific in the wording of your questions.

I would not ask " is the dial original" because it could be original, but re-painted or refurbished, so ask that. Ask specific questions about the case, the movement. Ask for more pictures if there are some missing that you want. The movement is often not shown. Ask for a clear picture. Ask if the watch pictured is the actual watch on which you are bidding. If you do not get the answers you want, or the reply takes too long, forget that one and find another.

My thoughts based upon my experience.

This advice was true 18 months ago. Now the trade appears to have moved on and now relatively new watches with generic movements have been sourced and the dials repainted with random names and the case backs engraved to match. No longer is the trade one of freshening up old watches and instead it is one of deliberate deception.

Of course one cannot brand the entire country with this and there are doubtless excellent sellers still to be found but these fakes form the majority of the watches to be found on eBay from India.

In terms of Tissot, yes I did see original pieces, but due to the climate there, they were in poor condition- dials were pretty much a ruin, the movements were rusted.
The repainted Tissot watches from India I've seen on eBay have nothing to do with how they must have looked before- I'm pretty confident that the vast majority of these "dial versions" have never existed. To sum it up- these pieces are either Bombay Specials or lost causes. Which is the same thing, unless you really want to overpay for a ruined watch, hoping that it's only a thin layer of rust on the movement, and unless you have a redial specialist capable of performing miracles.
OK, if you want a lesson in anatomy of a Tissot Bombay Special, we're starting the lecture.

As you can see, here we have a Tissot with an awfully repainted dial, wrong fonts used, this dial colour has never been used in this model, and you can see how badly the redial has been done by looking carefully at the rubbish quality of paint used at 12 o'clock position of the dial... Should I carry on? OK, I'm done with this example. There isn't a single thing that would be correct about it. And all of that lovely pile of rubbish for a really modest $187. Aaaarghhh!!!!
There isn't much wrong about the movements, at least in terms of them being genuine. If you look carefully at the movement pictures, they often- as I have said- bear signs of water-inflicted damage. If parts were replaced, keep in mind that they not necessarily are genuine and might be of poor quality.

My advice as to these watches? When you see one, don't click the link to the listing. It's a waste of time. Just keep scrolling.

Guess what all of these watches have in common:

I have nothing against a country or people, but regardless of the rationale or humidity, slapping a brand name on a mass printed dial and sticking it in a case is deplorable. If I were just starting a vintage collection, I would steer way clear of markets producing a disproportionate number of illegitimate watches.

On the other hand I got a perfectly decent example of Indian brand Allwyn, with a nice working Seiko licensed movement 63a for something like $7.
