    Info about this Wittnauer Chronograph?

    Hi all,

I just won an auction for this Wittnauer chronograph and was wondering if anyone could give me any information about it. The listing said it measures 35mm and is from 1938. I'm wondering if the dial has been refinished, what kind of movement it has, etc.

Here is the text from the listing:

1938 WITTNAUER Telemeter Chronograph Stainless Steel Watch Serial number is 5753386. (see photo) Honestly, I really know very little about this time piece. It was my father's from as far back as I can remember.

The photos here tell the whole story, and much better than I can... so look close. I "lost" this watch years ago, and now as we are packing to move, it suddenly appeared in the back of a drawer. I wound it up and it appears to be working fine.

Look at the photos CAREFULLY as they are part of the description. The "crystal" is scratched and the watch has been worn a lot. I took it to a jeweler to get the back opened and he offered to buy it before he ever opened the watch... and we all know that deal. As you can see in the photos, the watch needs to be cleaned... something the jeweler offered to do, but I figure whomever buys the watch should have that option. Sold AS-IS, as a pre-worn, used timepiece.
Here are the pics from the listing:

    Thanks for any help!

Yes, either a Venus 188 or Valjoux 7730 ... virtually identical to me. Always best to ask questions before buying.

I just read that the Venus 188 started in 1948. Does that mean that this watch isn't really from 1938?

You might, but it won't be this watch.

Just get an American (or any) pocket watch made in the 1900's and you'll constantly be a winner in the 100 year old watch stakes! :)

I received the watch, and it is beautiful. Winds smoothly, keeps time well, and chronograph works / resets properly. To my uneducated eyes, the dial and case both look to be unaffected by any sort of attempt at refinishing.

Two questions: 1) Is there any way for me to tell what year this was produced? 2) Can anyone tell me how much it is worth? I see worse ones (refinished dials, etc) selling for a lot more than I paid for this one.
