    Info on Roamer

Hi, I've got this oldish Roamer that I picked up quite some time ago that doesn't get as much wrist time as it should as it is quite keen on going a bit fast.

I have struggled a bit to get an info on it as I reckon it is a lower end model. The name on the dial is RW with the roamer underneath, I thought maybe RW could be a budget side brand perhaps, the caseback doesn't look like any others I have seen as it is a bit more utilitarian and a cheaper looking stamping with no serial number on the inside as mentioned on a reference website i found. It was bought off eBay for not a great deal of money but not from India though i wouldn't rule out it having been there at some point but the dial looks original with no signs of a refinish.

I'm not looking for a value just a bit of information.

A clearer shot of the dial would assist - I can't see for example Swiss Made on the dial which hints at a Mumbai Special. However I also suspect that it will have something like an ST 1940 movement inside.

I'm attempting to get a photo of the caseback and movement posted, Flickr is being problematic. I hadn't considered the lack of Swiss made on the dial. Were some made in India or just restored out there?

I'm going to let trim pronounce on this one as this is much more his area of specialisation. I don't like the dial and I'm suspicious of a redial - just take a look on eBay at Indian resellers. The back and movement make me hmmm. As I suspected an ST movement. But, and the reason I wouldn't rule this a fake is that I think at the very end of Roamer production in the Seventies I suspect they did produce some watches like this with ST movements. As far as I'm aware there was never Roamer production in India.

Well it is a little complicated as Roamer sold old tooling to a company in India after they went belly up. That said, I don't believe they actually managed to make anything with it.

I am afraid this looks like a fake to me. I'd have to have it in my hand to be 100%.

I suspected as much, not a real issue though as it was a £10 punt on a brand I know nothing about. I have to say the more I looked at them the more the alarm bells went off in my head. Still a nice enough looking little watch to wear on occasion.

    Thanks for the expertise.

I don't have a photo of the caseback of mine, but it is stamped not engraved, aside from that you can see similarities, but also you can see differences in quality - the dial logos aren't just painted and the dial is a sunburst paint finish.

Well, despite the similarities between the movements, they are actually different. This one has an Adolf Schild Cal. 1800 or derivative:
