Information on this eterna matic kontiki 20

    Hello All,
I know next to nothing about vintage watches, but I really like how this looks. I was wondering if you guys would be able to tell if its original? and what year it was made? Thanks for your help in advance.

I am a long way from an expert (especially on the Eterna brand) but I would say that your watch looks to be late 1960s to mid 1970s. There are quite a few people around this forum that can probably help. Hopefully they will chime in.

    Nice looking watch BTW.

I know of none. But you can look up Dr. Ranfft's description of the movement and see when the example he had was made.

Actually, just contact Eterna through their website. They are really forthcoming with vintage info.

    Hi there,

As for dating.... contacting Eterna is best way to find out info! However, the good Dr, did also suggest a German site that has a rough table of dates to serial numbers...

Bei den gelben Seriennummern handelt es sich um Seriennummern von Uhren die mit Widmung und Jahreszahl versehen sind.

However.... your watch may date later than 1974?

You can find the movement number under the balance wheel which will be something like 14xx ( the higher the number the later it is ) followed by a U or K or UD. Yours will probably be K which IIRC means 'date', and I reckon it's a late one so maybe 1489K? The movement on yours looks nice and clean, but ( and I may be wrong! ) I think your dial has been played with. The hands are probably original, but the typeface on 'ETERNA MATIC' is wrong I think. Also the case looks like it may have been refinished, although the crown looks original. If you look closely at the very centre of the crystal, you may find the 5 balls Eterna logo embossed - this would mean it has the original crystal.

I really like the Kontiki's, I have two. The one on the right is the 36mm - 1489K. You can just about make out the embossed logo on the crystal on the 34mm on the left.

Wow! thank you guys for all of your help! The Vintage forum is amazing! Sgt.-pluck those watches are stunners and you were spot on the watch is 1498k and the serial number puts the movement at 1968 I think? Due to the alterations on the dial though I think I am gonna pass this one up, the guy did send me a close up shot of the movement. the Photo is too big to post but its 1498k and a 555 serial number. Wonder why they ruined the dial and used a legit movement?
